Description of Massages and some of our Spa treatments
Signature Bodywork Massage
The Bodywork Signature Massage is our regular hour and a half session that includes a combination of massage styles and techniques called integrated therapy. Therapeutic in nature and designed to relieve sore tense muscles while still being a part of the relaxational massage family. In some cases deep pressure, PNF stretching and/or Thai Massage will also be incorporated. Each massage is different depending what your body's needs are for that session.
Sports Massage
This massage is a popular choice for our weekend warriors. We use a variation of high energy vibrating and deep massage strokes to increase blood flow to recovering muscles. Several rotations of massage techniques can be used on the same muscle group and it is common to use a full hour session on just that specify group. Physicians often order this type of massage to speed up recovery and to increase range of motion for their injured patients; while athletes find this an effective way to ready themselves for both pre and post sporting events. Our Sports Massage is offered in both a 60 and 90 minute session for more of a full body "workout".
Swedish Massage
Swedish Massage is the most common massage taught and practiced. It's sole purpose is for relaxation. Very light pressure is used in Swedish Massage. It is done using five basic strokes: effleurage, petrassage, friction, vibration and tapotement. all strokes are gentle, gliding and centripetal (flowing towards the heart) in nature. Swedish massage is most practiced in Day Spas.
Hot Stone Massage
Designed to release the flow of energy through the 7 Chakras of the body, Hot Stone Massage has become a popular therapy in the recent years. Performed with specially charged flat and oval river stones which are heated to a temperature slightly above that of the natural human's body, the stones are placed on certain reflex points. This helps the body release stress and increases the Chi or energy flow. We also use the hot stones as tools in the massage portion of this spa treatment. By far this is the best and least painful way to work on sore hypertense muscles and the oh so common Runner's IT Band trigger point pain. Sessions last 90 minutes, and for best results must be performed with massage oil rather than creme. Hot Stone Massage is available in all locations.
Thai Massage
Put in simple terms, is the therapist putting you in yoga positions. It is done on the floor with both you and the therapist fully clothed. Thai includes a lot of deep pressure compression, stretching, pulling and bending. Sessions are usually two hours, you can also request a 90 minute routine. Expect to feel regenerated and vibrant afterwards. If you have severe problems with herniated disk or osteoporosis, a more gentle form of Thai is available. Please wear non-binding clothing and do not eat two hours prior this treatment.
Rose Mud Spa Foot Treatment with Reflexology
An elixir of French Rose Mineral Clay blended with Jojoba, Avocado and other essential oils make this treatment one of the most relaxing and moisturizing treatments we offer at Bodywork Massage and Day Spas. This 30 minute treatment includes an exfoliation of the feet and lower legs followed with the Rose Mud Heated Wrap. To finish off this immobilizing treatment is a Reflexology session using Peppermint & Lemon Peel lotion or Body Butter. You can add this treatment to your massage, facial or simply have it on it's own.
Body Scrub (Salt-Glows or Microbuff Body Polish)
Salt Glows, also referred to as body scrubs, are specifically designed to increase circulation and exfoliate by scrubbing the skin with a course but gentle, non-greasy mixture of a sea-salt, essential oils, and moisturizing lotions. This is usually done on the back, feet or legs, but can be applied to any region of the body, excluding the face and neck. The Microbuff is the same treatment but using a more gentle water based creme, perfect if you don't have time to shower after your massage. Great way to combat dry skin due to cooler weather or for people that have a problem with skin blemishes and acne.
Paraffin Treatments
A combination of warm paraffin wax and glycerin help relieve the body of minor aches and pain and is great for moisturizing as well. The paraffin we use is a Sadoma Detoxifying Mud which is excellent for pre-arthritic conditions as well making it a great added bonus for the weekend warrior's massage.
Ear Candling
Ear candling or coning is a simple, pain free, effective method for removing excess wax, fungus and in some cases parasites that may cause impaction in the ear canal. With you lying on your side a special conical candle is inserted gently into the external auditory meatus and lit. The combination of heat and design forms a vortex that draws the now softened deposits up into the cone. You may hear a crackling sound as this happens. After the session, if you choose, have the therapist show you what came out of your ear. You will be amazed! Session last about 45 minutes for both ears. Ear Candling is done on a homeopathic basis only and should not be substituted for professional medical care. People who are suffering from an active ear infection, have ear tubes, perforated ear drums, or artificial ear drums should not have ear candling done.
Body Hair Waxing, Shaving and Trimming
Body hair waxing is now available for both men and women. Bodyhair trimming and/or shaving is still only available to men. True prices are determined by amount of hair to be removed. Bodywork Massage and Day Spas is one of the few places in the area that does men's Brazilian waxing. We use several different kinds of wax suitable for your skin and comfort level. We do offer for a slight charge a Lidocaine skin prep to numb the area being waxed, this reduces the sting factor. Please note that areas to be waxed should not be trimmed or shaved beforehand. Waxing will be done by same sex therapist and must be pre-scheduled as only senior staff provide this service.
Neuromuscular Therapy (NMT)
NMT has also been called trigger point therapy. It is done with a more concise, pinpointed application of pressure. Over a period of time a muscle will start to store an accumulation of toxins, these spots are called trigger points. Sometimes when the therapist hits a trigger point there may be some discomfort involved, soon this sensation will disappear and the muscle tension will return to normal.
Myofascial Release (MFR)
MFR is done using slow, deep strokes with little to no lubricant. It is designed to warm up the strong connective tissue which lies underneath the epidermis and sometimes gets "stuck" due to atrophy, injury, bad posture or stress, thereby preventing ease of mobility.
Craniosacral Therapy (CST)
CST is a gentle, hands on method of enhancing the flow of blood, lymph and cerebrospinal fluid. It facilitates the bodies own natural healing process. In addition, its positive affects are most apparent in the brain, spinal cord, immune and hormonal systems. Thus alleviating chronic dysfunction and pain. You can be fully clothed for this treatment.
PNF (Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation)
PNF is defined as: Specific application of muscle energy techniques that uses strong contraction combined with stretching and muscular pattern retraining. In every day language, is when the therapist helps you gain a further range of motion in a certain body part. Thus lowering the chance for injury when involving yourself in sports or even everyday activities.
Ultrasound and E-Stim
Ultrasound and Electronic Stimulation are both therapeutic modalities used for rehabilation. Ultrasound sends gentle heat waves deep into the muscle, helping relax tight tissue. E-Stim, stimulates the muscle and increases healing time. Dr.'s Rx may be required for this therapy.

Waxing F.A.Q
I've never had waxing done before, how does waxing work?
Warm wax is applied to the hair and then a non-woven cloth strip is lightly pressed onto the wax. The strip is quickly pulled off and the hair is uprooted. Different kinds of wax and applicators will be used on different areas of the body. Waxing is safe for ALL areas of body hair and we are one of the few places in Tampa Bay that offer Men's full Brazilian waxing, which is our most popular waxing service for men.
I've seen The 40-Year Old Virgin, does waxing really hurt that much?
Everybody has this on their minds, in the movie, they didn't wax according to protocol; it was waxing for the most comical effect. The first time you get waxed, it can be uncomfortable, but it gets better with each visit. Of course, it also depends on how much hair you have. While it will most likely never be a pleasurable experience for most, people that get waxed with regularity often are able to close their eyes and relax. For an additional fee, you can be treated with Lidocaine, a numbing topical solution used in Dr's offices. Some people take ibuprofen about an hour beforehand, that can help minimize some of the pain. We do not recommend this or drinking alcohol before hand as it promotes an amplified response such as bleeding. Note: If you wait more than the 4-8 weeks recommended time between waxing, it will be like the first time being waxed, both in pain and breakout factor. Hair grows in cycles. Ideally, we want to wax all the adult hairs at different points in their growth cycle, this will cut the pain and histamine response level. It will also increase the time between waxing. This is the same reason why you have numerous treatments when laser body hair off permanently.
Should I shave my hair before waxing?
No, the hair growth needs to be about 1/4" long for body hair and about 1/8" for eyebrows and hair on the ears. The wax has to have something to hold onto in order for it to be uprooted.
When will the hair re-appear?
That depends on every individual person, but with the majority of people it will take about 6-10 weeks for all of the hair you have waxed to reappear. All of it does not grow back at the same rate. Myself I have allot of course body hair and I am satisfied if I am totally smooth between 7-10 days, people with lighter and thinner hair will experience much longer results.
Is it true that the hair will grow back thicker after waxing?
No. Actually, if you continue to wax with regularity, it will eventually slow down the hair growth and damage some of the follicles which will inhibit hair growth.
A friend said my skin will turn red after waxing. Is that true?
Yes, and sometimes there is some swelling, depending on your skin's level of sensitivity. It goes away in a few hours for most people and is normal. The payoff of having a smooth back, groomed eyebrows, etc. is worth it for most.
I sometimes get bumps after waxing. Is there anything I can do to prevent this?
Yes, using a scrub on the part of the body that is getting waxed helps immensely. Avoiding saunas, hot steamy showers and tanning for a few days afterwards helps as well. But the most important thing is to use a treatment 1-2 times a day for a week after waxing. note: This is a natural histamine response your body produces, and some may even bruise. We always recommend to budget time between waxing and vacations, photo shoots or any other activity that requires a flawless skin appearance. I recommend benadryl and remember the more you wax the least likely you will have this problem.
Can I tan before or after waxing?
It's not a good idea for the 48 hours prior or afterwards. Why would you want to make your skin more sensitive?
Are there any medical conditions/situations when I should not get waxing services?
Everyone's level of sensitivity varies. If you think that you might be sensitive, then let us know and we can do a patch test. If you use a lot of AHAs or BHAs, or are on certain medications for acne, or use certain steroids, you might be more prone to sensitivity. It also depends on what is getting waxed. Someone who uses a topical acne prescription might not want to get their eyebrows groomed, but their back and neck could be fine. Waxing over areas where skin cancer was removed is not recommenced nor is waxing for people that are Hemophiliacs, Active Chemotherapy Patients or have a history of skin tears. Each person will fill out an intake sheet beforehand and the Therapist/Aesthetician will consult with you before starting the waxing process.
