Reconstruction Tour
Duration: 2 hours; $40; After the Battle of Port Royal in 1861, Beaufort became the Union Headquarters for the South. Thus began Reconstruction. Take this tour to learn about this unique period of history and some of the structures that played a key role in this time of rebuilding. Emancipation came early to the Sea Islands, due to an early draft of the Proclamation being read on the former John Joyner Smith Plantation (the current site of the US Naval Hospital), January 1, 1863. The tour begins with an overview of the town's history and continues on to St. Helena Island, home of the current day historical site Penn Center, where Martin Luther King spent much of his time writing his "I Have a Dream" speech. He rehearsed this well-known speech in the Brick Baptist Church built by slaves in 1855 for the plantation owners. The tour continues to this site and many more, all of enormous historic value. It concludes with a story about Robert Smalls (1839-1915), a slave born in Beaufort, who achieved not only freedom, but fame and success unbeknownst to freedmen of that era. A Civil War hero, Robert Smalls was rewarded by the Union for commandeering the ship The Planter in the Charleston Harbor. He took his $1500 reward to return home and buy the house in which he was raised. What a story! What a place! What a tour.

Sea Island Plantation and Gullah Tour
Duration: 3 hours; $60; In the mid-1800's (before the Civil War) there were 151 plantations of varying sizes in the St. Helena Parish of South Carolina, which was comprised completely of sea islands surrounded by salt water estuaries. Take this tour to discover and explore the second-largest of these, which at one time had 224 slaves working on its nearly 3,000 acres. You will see the past come alive as you drive down the Avenue of Oaks and visit the Slave Cemetery and the Praise House. It's a heavy history... but there are some uplifting highlights too, such as the Penn Center, founded in 1862 by Laura Towne and Ellen Murray, who came to the Beaufort area to provide educational opportunities for the recently freed slaves of the sea islands. The same Center served as a retreat for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and it now holds a mission of "promoting and preserving the history and culture of the Sea Islands," also known as Gullah culture.
