Basil is modeled after our most recent Chicago restaurant, Thai Village, which opened in 1997. My mom, Judy Ruanphae, opened many restaurants prior to Thai Village. All still remain successfull restaurants under their new owners. Thai Valley 1, Thai Valley 2, Thai Lagoon, Thai Eatery, Thai Village and finally Basil, here in Columbus. She started the restaurant after 15 years of working as a registered nurse. My father, Sam Ruanphae, was working as an electrical engineer and started full time at the restaurant shortly after opening Thai Valley 1. My mom has always tried to make all of her restaurants a comfortable and inviting place that focuses on the wide variety that Thai food can offer.
