Smith Street: pulsing heart of Cobble Hill; site of several semi-quiet restaurant revolutions; and site of the biggest Bastille Day celebration in the United States. The revolution gets considerably more noisy when Smith Street is covered in sand, the petanque tournament gets into full swing, and the national TV networks descend on this little stretch of French Independence revelry. But it doesn't end when the holiday is over and the New Orleans swing bands have packed up.
Bar Tabac, organizer of this successful event, has brought a vibrant energy to this neighborhood, catering to all on Smith Street and embodying on its corner site the spirit of the tabac in France, the small storefronts and annexes to bars, where people buy lottery tickets, chewing gum, and of course, tobacco. Bar Tabac may not actually sell tobacco, but the lively comraderie, the classic '60s bar, the antique foosball table, all conspire to transport you to a place in France, where, granted, they might not all know your name, but...give it some time.
Live jazz four times a week, storied brunches, and the ever-satisfying Bistro Bites keep everyone coming back. On Tuesdays, Stephane and the Gypsies entrance with their combination of Flamenco and classic jazz. Other evenings, enjoy the sounds of the Baby Blue Orchids and the Mad Jazz Hatters. But always keep in mind the intimate back room, away but not apart from the lively bar, the coziness of a quiet dinner, the atrium skylight, the glow of the candles.
