Chef Tarek AlBasti was an unsuspecting member of the Egyptian National Crew team when he was snatched up by a year-abroad student from Indiana. He accompanied his new wife to the states in 1994, with only a few (rather dubious) words of English in his repertoire. There he painstakingly began to learn the art of the restaurateur in various and sundry kitchens across the Midwest, until apprenticing himself to a wild Sicilian with a reputation for culinary brilliance.
