Serena is a compassionate and loving therapist that invests her time and energy into the well-being of herself and others.
She fully understands the need to slow down and create time for self-care, love and nourishment. She offers a deep sense of presence and can blend her wisdom of many modalities to create a very special session designed with your needs in mind. She is extremely knowledgeable about the body, from both an anatomy as well as an emotional stand point. Working with old traumas can be the key to unlock chronic tension and tightness in the body. Her intention is to offer healing touch, inspire self-reliance and a greater sense of trust within our own bodies.
AcroYoga has taken her passion for play, creativity and flow to all new heights!
Her adventurous spirit and love of world travel has brought her offerings to a global level. She is very excited to help grow the AcroYoga community here in Portland and share this magic with as many souls she can touch! It has been a powerful and transformative practice for her.
Both her AcroYoga and Hoop Dance classes focus on self-love, tapping into your inner child, taking care of your temple, celebrating your health and existence
And the knowing that you already have everything you need to feel good! She teaches from the heart, and you can feel her love and dedication in her presence. She invites you to let go and come PLAY!!!
Serena is a truly gifted healer. Her vast knowledge and awareness of the physical form combined with her intuitive touch and healing, work together to create deep healing in your system, on a physical, mental, emotional, and physical level. I left feeling like we touched on something very deep and I am excited to start my healing process with her. The container she holds is safe and sweet, and my body feels melted, more relaxed, and more aligned. I can't wait to go back!
Serena is wonderful at being simultaneously gentle and strong. She goes deep enough to get real work done while being sensitive to the tenderness this creates. She's rooted enough in her self and practice to hold space to allow me to feel comfortable to go deep into myself on the table and do the real inner work that body work is truly valuable to me for.
Serena is truly a gifted healer. She is incredibly knowledgable and made me feel so comfortable from the moment she greeted me. Immediately after my session I sensed a world of difference in my body, mind and spirit (at the end of the session I felt like I was floating!). This morning I'm waking up feeling like I have my body as I used to know it back – less pain, better posture and so much more connected. She really takes her time and went above and beyond my expectations. I will definitely be back and would recommend her to anyone. So happy I found her!
If there was a major league massage team, Serena would have the record home runs. The therapy begins when she invites you into the space she's set for the massage- perfect aromatherapy, beautiful lighting, and uncommon, relaxing world music. Then, Serena starts the session by a gentle yet inquisitive check in about your feelings in your body and your goals for the massage. One thing I love about her sessions is that she prefers to provide longer sessions, which typically result in feeling transformed. Her technique is strong, intuitive, long and slow and deep compressions, and she always encourages breath and making whatever noise comes out of you. All in all, she's a safe choice for deeply healing body-mind-spirit awakening.
I was fortunate enough to have my first structural integration session with Serena Scaglione this evening. I feel like I've been calmly and slowly reborn into my body, and I'm so ready to begin this journey of nourishing the mind/body/spirit. #gratitude Several months and several sessions later. Bodywork with Serena has become a very personal and very integral part of my well-being and self care. She is extremely knowledgeable about the anatomy and connectivity of the human body and the very deeply understands the connection between physical health and mental, emotional, interpersonal well-being. As a family doctor, I have been thoroughly impressed by her work with me, and she has taught me so much more, beyond my medical training, about how to care for the body and for the self. From a medical perspective and from personal experience, I really believe she is one of the best massage therapists, body workers, and healers in Portland. Be good to the form you inhabit; spend time with this healer.
I can't speak highly enough of Serena's practice. I found her to be knowledgeable, present, and skilled. She had confidence working with my chronically painful injured wrist, and 1 day later my wrist feels great. I'll be scheduling another session to target this injury specifically. She also did some structural integration work with my back and pecs, which I found to be very therapeutic and helpful with my posture and back pain. Thanks Serena!
I feel a lot taller than I did two hours ago, my spine feels more spacious and upright, and my neck has been dramatically unbound from tension making my head feel like it is floating lightly as I walk. I just finished session 3 of an 11 session series of SOMA Structural Integration with Serena Scaglione of Awaken Integration. This is freakin' amazing. I can actually see a dramatic, visual change in my posture and length after each session. Moving toward the best, strongest, most free, feel-good version of me with every opportunity these days.
Serena has become a tremendously talented bodyworker. I consider myself a massage and bodywork connoisseur, and she is definitely my favorite bodyworker that I've received from recently. I really appreciate the modality she is working with – specifically somassage – it's very deep and effective as a therapeutic modality, but it also really allows you to drop deeply into stillness and relax. It's not overwhelming with the amount of intensity, and yet it also really shifted things in some of chronic muscular-skeletal patterns… and put me into a sublime altered state of deep relaxation. I loved my session and am looking forward to more!
I went to Serena for a Structural Integration session. …and whoaaaa, did it release a lot of stuff in my body! Feeling the difference before and after the work was amazing. I felt so much taller from finally having some separation between my vertebrae, and my neck felt like it was where it was supposed to be. After my concussion about a year and a half ago, it has been very important for me to find a bodyworker who can be sensitive to the needs of my spine. One of the most powerful moments was when Serena was massaging my sternum and opening up the front of my chest. I felt a huge emotional release and realized I was holding so much old energy there, and it had been causing my shoulders to curve inward. It was an amazing session, and I definitely plan to look into the whole series.
I am so happy when I find a bodyworker who has the intuitive touch. Serena's got it. She works with presence and just the right amount of good solid pressure. I received structural integration from her and I really felt places in my body as they were able to release and unwind, especially where I was experiencing pain in my neck and shoulders. I can't wait to go back and receive more structural integration, or perhaps I will try a Thai yoga massage! Serena is a woman of many talents – a licensed massage therapist, an acroYogi, a Thai massage therapist, a hoop dance instructor, and a structural integration practitioner. She really knows the human body well! And it is so cool how she integrates all of her experience with movement into the hands-on techniques. I am so lucky to be able to receive work from her! And I highly recommend her to anyone seeking deep, present bodywork.
Serena is a skilled and caring acrobatics instructor. She is very attentive to the needs of her students and offers clear instructions and personalized advice. Her classes are very fun!
Holly Hill – "Hollywood"
Serena is a fantastic hoop teacher and hoop maker. Her classes are well thought out for all levels and she teaches her classes with progression in mind, building each skill to make dancers of us all. When it comes to artistic hoop making, Serena is a master. Her colors and designs are beautiful. I especially love her collapsible hoops which fit nicely into an overhead when I travel.
Deepak Chopra - "For everyone, well being is a journey. The secret is committing to that journey and taking those first steps with hope and belief in yourself". Sessions are 1.5-2 hours in length.
Growth is always in the direction of greater love and happiness.
It is an awakening to what we truly desire inside. In order to experience health and well being, one must be able to embrace the process of growth that requires change in our lives, both psychologically and physically. Structural Integration, or "SOMA", is an 11 session format that supports the body and being to live harmoniously within an ever changing environment. It is a system of deep bodywork that works by way of the fascial (connective tissue) network, to release chronic, stored structural aberrations, and effectively realign the entire body.
SOMA Neuromuscular Integration® is a balance between structural work and neurological work.
The intention is to shift imbalances in the body that were created by either physical pain as well as emotional pain or stored trauma. Many of us might not realize how emotional trauma from our earlier years might still be affecting us.
There must be a "letting go" of what is no longer serving us, and an invitation for something new.
For many of us, there is an attachment to what is known and familiar, however painful or unsatisfactory this may be. With that attachment come fears and anxieties of the unknown as well as resistance to the changes that might take us there. If we open up and create space for change, a new sense of self-love and happiness can emerge.
Imagine a life that has a deeper sense of self-reliance, a body that can process experiences more effectively, with greater ease and awareness.
As the body rebalances itself in gravity, it becomes more efficient in function, with greater resistance to disease and injury. Improved posture, pain relief, more coordination and grace are just some of the many benefits that people experience after receiving the 11 soma sessions.
Structural Integration uses the Holographic Body reading, as well as movement re-education exercises.
We look at the body from a place of awe, and observe how gravity is affecting this individual structure. Please wear underwear to your session! Women will be given a tube top to wear.
A brief description of the Structural integration 11 session series:
Focus: Free the tissue surrounding the rib cage and lengthen the lower back. Result: Feeling a lightness and well-being, a more upright posture, and fuller, deeper breathing.
Focus: The body's foundation, the lower legs and feet. Result: Feeling of being firmly grounded and in touch with reality.
Focus: Lengthen the sides of the body and free the shoulders. Result: Expand breathing, greater relaxation and more immediately available energy.
Sessions 4, 5, 6
Focus: Adjust and lengthen the body's vertical center line, or core. Result: Better balance and freedom of movement. Walking takes a fraction of the energy typically expended.
Focus: Release the muscles of the neck, face and head. Result: More softened, relaxed appearance in the face, increased self-reliance and personal power.
Sessions 8, 9, 10
Focus: Integrate the whole body in a new and more efficient manner. Result: Less stress and more energy as the body's structure is better aligned with gravity.
Focus: The arms, the movement of energy through the arms and down the back. Result: Increased rotary function. Energy moving through the elbows, shoulders, scapula to sacrum. Arms swing relaxed.
Ashiatsu is a barefoot massage technique in which the therapist delivers deep, broad, consistent pressure while utilizing their feet and body weight.
Working with gravity instead of against it, Ashiatsu therapists are able to provide an effective therapeutic massage without causing discomfort to themselves or the client.
Warm infused oil is applied to the body making this deep massage very luxurious and relaxing.
Parallel bars are used above the massage table for balance, support and client safety.
Sessions are 60 min, 90 min or 2 hours in length.
Somassage is a full body deep massage that was developed from the principles of SOMA Neuromuscular Integration.
The body is worked in a specific direction that supports the sense of greater suspension and verticality. Somassage works with Tensegrity to address the suspension mechanics and any compensations that the body is experiencing in order to right itself in gravity. The intention is to create an easeful upright posture that feels really wonderful to live in!
The body is approached through a holistic view, both physically and psychologically.
We see the body not as a collection of parts, but as a whole, reinforcing a global awareness of how connected the body really is. Somassage is client-centered, and the body is more sacred than the recipe. It can be combined with treatment work to develop a session that focuses on the specific needs of the client.
Since Somassage is NOT Structural Integration, the work is not permanent and must be repeated regularly like other massage techniques.
Many people that have gone through the 11 session series receive a monthly Somassage afterwards as a "tune up" session, while the body continues to integrate the new balance from the series work. Even if you have not had any Structural Integration work, Somassage is highly effective and beneficial for everyone! You will experience a new sense of verticality, release of tension, increased flexibility, relaxed energy and a deeper sense of awareness.
Somassage uses the Holographic Body reading.
We look at the body from a place of awe, and observe how gravity is affecting this individual structure. Please wear underwear to your session! Women will be given a tube top to wear.
Receivers should come prepared wearing loose comfortable clothing. Sessions are 60 min, 90 min or 2 hours in length.
Thai massage is a style of bodywork that is traditionally done on a Thai mat on the floor with the receiver fully clothed.
It is one part of a whole system of Traditional Thai medicine. Some of the many techniques that are used are Thai deep tissue, passive stretching, range of motion, hot herbal compresses, as well as clear focused intent to open up the energy layers of the body. Thai massage can be catered to the needs/desires of the receiver. It can be fully relaxing, or just like Structural Integration, it can restructure our body alignment and relieve pain from acute traumatic injury.
Serena has traveled to Thailand 5 times
Doing in depth study of Thai massage and Thai medicine from many wonderful schools in the Chiang Mai region, in Northern Thailand. Thai massage is a beautiful dance with the body. Serena will move your body into different positions and tune into the subtle energy body. With Thai massage, you can never go too deep, you can only go too fast. Slowing down, listening, breathing, and opening are some of the key elements to unlock tension and trauma to inspire self awakening.
Therapeutic Flying Massage
Please inquire with Serena when you book your session.
Therapeutic flying can also be viewed as an inverted aerial massage.
The receiver, or "Flyer" is lifted and supported in the air and experiences a sense of weightlessness, trust and surrender. Their only job is to remain passive and receive.
The giver, or "Base" uses gravity to stretch and open the flyer's body.
The key to being a base is finding balance and alignment in the structure, and centering your flyer's center of gravity over your own.
Serena is very skilled in finding such alignment and can lift people of all shapes, weights and sizes, using the support of gravity and the earth beneath her.
Therapeutic flights usually last around 10 minutes, and can be "added on" at the end of your Thai Massage.
What Is Visionary Craniosacral?
Sessions can be 30, 60 or 90 minutes, and can also be added on at the end of a Somassage or Structural Integration Session. Please inquire with Serena.
This is a healer's work; it specializes in matters of the heart and soul.
Visionary Craniosacral Work® combines sensitive, hands-on bodywork with meditative use of the inner eye and inner ear.
Techniques are drawn from three principal traditions: osteopathy, energy work and Taoism. A supremely gentle approach, it is a way of "doing non-doing." It honors both the analytic perception of how things happen and the intuitive perception of how things really are. Combined, the soul can be touched and real healing can occur.
The craniosacral system includes the brain, the cerebrospinal fluid, the system of membranes inside the cranium, all 22 cranial bones, the spine and the sacrum.
Our cranial bones reflect our attitude; they sometimes get stiff because we are stiff and stubborn. Conversely, the more attitudinally relaxed and open we are, the more mobile our cranial sutures will be. This is a positive-feedback loop: being free and open in the head helps us have free and open attitudes, which helps the head be more free and open.
The cranial wave is an intelligent form of communication.
It is a form of movement that enables the sensitive observer to detect what body and spirit need. The breath is the most obvious rhythm of the body. The heartbeat is a little less obvious, but recognized by everyone. The third force, the cranial wave, is the most discreet, and so subtle that it can not be felt except in a meditative state. It is possible to listen to this field. The ability to do this is called 'the heart of listening'.
A visionary knows how to touch a client with precise and gentle contacts that help the client feel more aligned, and more at home in themselves.
Sometimes, by touching just the right place in just the right way, a visionary can help the client understand what troubles them, and what they need to reclaim their equanimity, and their place in life. Such work can also help the client access and release their healing potential. It is a deep and powerful unwinding of the body, mind, spirit and soul.
"This is the kind of Friend You are - Without making me realize My soul's anguished history, You slip into my house at night, And while I am sleeping, You silently carry off All my suffering and sordid past In your beautiful hands".
Structural Integration / Somassage
Why Do I Have to Wear Underwear to My Structural Integration Or Somassage Sessions?
This style of bodywork is different than your regular massage. The client participates in the session. They are requested to bring their self into a focused presence; to feel into their body. Usually we work one half of the body first, and then have you stand, walk and notice the shifts/changes you feel from side to side. We also do a holographic body reading in the beginning and end of the session, to observe the bodies structure so we can cater the session to the needs of the particular client, and witness the shifts after the session. Women will be given a tube top to wear.
What Is the Ideal Time Frame for the Structural Integration 11 Session Series?
Ideally we do each session once a week, and complete the series in 11 weeks. If you are planning on taking a trip, you can skip a week or two here and there if necessary. Please communicate any planned upcoming trips so we can plan the series around your schedule!
How Is Somassage Different than Deep Tissue Or Swedish Massage?
Somassage is NOT deep tissue massage. It is about holistically balancing the body in gravity. The goal of most swedish massage is relaxation. Most clients enjoy resting after the massage. The goal of Somassage is mobilizing relaxed energy, which is effective for clients before athletic events, a speech, or any time the client needs a clear, centered and present energy. The direction of Swedish massage is usually towards the heart, which aids in circulation. Somassage works with tensegrity in the structure which supports the suspension mechanics of the body. The intention of the directionality is to help the body be the most upright/aligned it could be in gravity, to experience ease and grace in all our movements in our daily life.
What Is the Difference Between Soma (Structural Integration) and Somassage?
SOMA addresses all connective tissue, specifically fascia and the relationships that create long lasting change in the tissue. Somassage addresses myofascia and muscle generally. SOMA utilizes a series of 11 sessions- with each session having a particular focus. Somassage is a one session full body massage that utilizes breath, movement and awareness to heighten the client's relationship with themselves. Both SOMA and Somassage use the Holographic Body reading.
Does Structural Integration Hurt?
Several factors determine the level of comfort or discomfort during a Structural Integration session. One is the degree of trauma in the system; another is how long fascial distortions have been in the client's body. Long-term distortions create more tenacious and widespread compensatory patterns, which may require more sustained pressure to release. Another factor is the degree of emotional charge associated with an area of injury or strain. Dr. Rolf made the point that during the therapeutic process, emotional pain is often experienced when deeply held emotional traumas and memories are brought to the surface and processed. Similarly, she reasoned, deep touch can result in a transitory experience of pain that is healing and transformative.
Is Structural Integration Suitable for Children Or Infants?
A common misunderstanding is that Structural Integration mainly focuses on correcting long-standing structural patterns. Structural Integration can also serve as a preventative measure to minimize potentially problematic patterns in the young. One of the things children learn from watching us is how we carry ourselves, and they will naturally imitate their parent's language, movement and other modes of expression. These patterns can be seen in family photos and are as much a part of a child's makeup as his hair color, height and predisposition to certain hereditary illnesses. Structural Integration can begin to correct patterns, such as posture imbalances which may limit the child's development and mobility.

What Kind of Clothes Are Good to Wear for a Thai Massage?
Think loose comfy clothing- like something you would wear to a yoga class. The pants should have some stretch to them, so I would leave the jeans at home. Also, if you add a Therapeutic Flight to the end of your Thai Massage, you will need a cozy stretchy pair of pants that doesn't require a belt to keep them on!
