skin, like all organs of the body, undergoes changes due to the passage of time. because exposed skin on the face, neck, chest and hands is subjected to damage from the environment, our skin often looks older than we feel.
lips are one of the most visible and the most expressive parts of the human body. they look best when they are full, plump and moist, giving a soft, gentle appearance to the mouth. thin lips are often seen as mean or angry. lips don't have sweat or oil glands. that is why lips tend to dry out faster and become chapped more easily. lips also do not have much melanin, a pigment in our skin that protects it from sun damage. it is important to use a moisturizer with a broad-spectrum sunscreen to protect the lips from the environment.
the "expression lines" also known as crow's feet or frown lines, initially seen only in emotional discussions in your thirties or forties - result from muscle contractions. when you concentrate, squint, or frown, the muscles of your face contract, causing your skin to furrow and fold. after years of frequent contraction, those dynamic wrinkles can linger even after the muscles are at rest.
acne is a disease of the hair follicle, caused by a combination of both internal and external factors. abnormal build-up of skin cells causes a plug at the opening of the hair follicle, creating a clogged pore, the first step in acne lesion formation. the clogged pore accumulates keratin, oil (sebum) and bacteria until it ruptures, releasing this mixture into the skin and causing inflammation. this inflammation can lead to painful cyst/abscess formation and scarring.
Melasma / Hyperpigmentation
hyperpigmentation is an abnormal darkening on the skin. the cells responsible for hyperpigmentation are located in the top layer of the skin and are called melanocytes. melanocytes produce a chemical compound called melanin by the action of an enzyme called tyrosinase. melanin is what makes the skin tan on exposure to the sun.
