Our designers have both explored new design horizons and integrated glass elements with pre-existing site conditions. We invite you to come in and share your project ideas with our designers. We co-design projects with architects and designers, helping to shape art in the public eye and corporate community: Hospitals and institutions have commissioned us to provide donor windows for philanthropists. Restaurants have commissioned booth dividers, screens for decor and privacy, as well as entryways and bar decor. Churches have commissioned liturgical scenes and color splashes to enlighten their congregation. Casinos display our custom glass in chandeliers, doors, windows and special suspended lighting. Commercial installation pieces and laser-crisp detail work pose no challenge to our talented glass etching staff. Custom Glass Bevels & Table Tops and Shelfs

Custom bevels can be made to any quantity, size and thickness. We also manufacture custom beveled table tops, shelves, and beveled mirrors. History of Alpine Stained Glass

In 1973, Alpine Stained Glass started at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas located in rural Southern California.

As they put their first stained glass lampshade together they fell in love with its beauty and charm. At that time stained glass art was in relative obscurity, practiced only in a handful of studios nationwide. Inspired by their experience, the Thomas' offered free classes to anyone who would attend so that they could share their newfound love for glass.

Alpine's new 6,000 square foot facility is located in the heart of El Cajon, CA.

We are a leading distributor, supplier and manufacturer of hundreds of types of stained glass, fused glass, architectural glass, tools, supplies, doors, windows and entryways. Our customers include stained and fused glass craftspersons - both hobbyist and professional, builders, homeowners, architects, designers, and manufacturers.

While Alpine Stained Glass has grown tremendously, our spirit of innovation, community, and love for glass remains the same.

The History of Stained Glass

Stained glass is an art form that dates back a thousand years to pre-medieval Europe.

The process of creating stained glass panels has changed very little since then. However, the past thirty years have produced an evolution of stained glass tools and supplies. These technological advances have played a primary role in the resurgence of interest in the art of stained glass. Advances in lead composition, tool improvement, and material availability highlight technology's influence on this artform.

Historically, stained glass windows used soft lead came.

In the 1970's antimony was added to lead as a strengthen agent, transforming the stained glass industry. Leaded glass panels could now be built to last through the years without the sagging inherent in the previously soft lead. The windows no longer needed to be wired to heavy steel bars and could be supported through lighter and easier to form bracebar.

Some stained glass tools as we think of them today did not exist 30 years ago.

Lead was cut by the glass craftsman using hand sharpened and wax coated linoleum knives. Today we have glass nippers with hardened steel that cleanly cut lead. The arcane knowledge of cutting lead is now made easy to every beginning craftsperson.

Also, all glass edges had to be filed by hand using a special stone.

Although initially controversial among stained glass purists of the time, the invention of diamond motorized grinders allowed the copper foiling technique to become more popular. It became possible to more easily create complex panels once reserved for creation only with lead came.

As recently as 25 years ago, most art glass had to be imported from Europe and was difficult to come by in America.

Spectrum and Bullseye began manufacturing glass in the US with just a few colors in the late 1970's and early 80's thereby making glass widely accessible in America. Since then, these companies have undergone significant growth, other glass manufacturers emerged, and glass now comes in hundreds of complex colors and textures.

Stained glass, once only found in church windows, illuminating liturgical scenes, and illustrating biblical events is now widely used by artists, interior designers, and architects the world over.

At the center of this growth is a series of technological advances and innovations. Stained glass will continue to evolve through annual conventions held by industry representatives, artists, and craftspersons from all over the world.

After your door and all its features are selected we will begin the ordering process. Alpine will have your stock entryway delivered to you in approximately 4-8 weeks, sometimes even less. Others can take 12-16 weeks to deliver. It's a convenience many of our customers and contractors appreciate.

After you have watched the quick tutorial, you will begin by telling the program where to find an image of your house. The best images to use would be ones that you have taken with a digital camera or those you may have scanned into the computer. If you do not have an image of your house yet, do not worry! We have supplied you with a lot of samples you can use including single and multiple door entryways, interior doors, french back doors, and more.

Then Add and Adjust Your Hardwood Door

Now you will want to add some new doors to your picture. Choose a door style and off you go! We have included over 300 doors in various styles for you to choose from. Feel free to move the door image around to place it properly in your entryway. You can also change the scale of the door as well as distort it in case the door does not fit your photography exactly.

Now Create A Complete Entryway By Adding More Doors and Sidelights

You can add up to five entryway pieces onto the stage at once. This could include two doors, two sidelights and a transom to create a complete entryway!

These doors represent the Arts and Crafts movement that contain the clean lines and shapes unique to that period. These doors may be purchased with existing glass or left open for custom panels. They are made with Brazilian Mahogany, a hardwood with a tight grain and naturally durable oils. Sidelights are also available.
