Naturopathic Medicine
Naturopathic Medicine
Naturopathic Medicine is a distinctively natural approach to health and healing that recognizes the integrity of the whole person with a focus on disease prevention and identification of the root cause of disease. Naturopathic Medicine combines natural nontoxic therapies with current advances in health and medicine. Naturopathic Physicians (ND) are the only practitioners trained in both traditional healing arts and modern medical science. NDs are licensed as primary care physicians in the state of Oregon.
Naturopathic Physicians
Naturopathic Physicians are trained in a broad scope of therapies including nutrition counseling, lifestyle coaching, herbal medicine, exercise therapeutics, vitamins and minerals, flower essences, homeopathy and prescription medications. NDs perform physical examinations including gynecological care, order and interpret lab tests, and diagnose and treat disease. They cooperate with all other branches of medical science, referring patients to other practitioners for treatment or diagnosis when appropriate.
Other Medical Approaches
The practice of Naturopathic Medicine emerges from six underlying principles of healing. It is these principles that distinguish the profession from other medical approaches:
First, Do No Harm
The Healing Power of Nature
Identify and Treat the Cause
Treat the Whole Person
Doctor as Teacher
Prevention
Massage Therapy
Massage Therapy is known to be one of the oldest healing methods.
It has been used and documented throughout humanity since as early as 2330BC. The various different styles or modalities are used to achieve stress relief, decreased anxiety and blood pressure, general relaxation, pain relief and/or increased flexibility and range of motion. Therapeutic touch is a great corner-stone for any self-care program. More and more research is showing the positive benefits of massage therapy in various different areas of health and well-being for people of all ages.
In the state of Oregon
Massage Therapists are required to graduate from a 500hr program that includes anatomy, physiology, pathology, kinesiology, massage theory and practical applications as well as clinical practice, ethics, communication and sanitation. Each therapist is required to expand upon their knowledge base via continuing education classes in the area of their choice. While relaxation is a vital component of a healthy lifestyle, the style and focus of massage at aja is of a therapeutic nature.
How Aja Began
In 2006, a shared workplace brought together Dr. Jennifer O'Leary, Andrea Thompson, LMT and Amanda Casley, LMT.
We became instant friends due to our common interests in music, the outdoors, good food and life. Our friendship was strengthened by the deep passion that we share for natural health, personal growth and patient care. As we started to discuss our own goals and dreams, an image of an integrative clinic began to form. On New Year's Eve of 2009, the three of us put our ideas and plans to paper and laid out a path that would connect us for the rest of our lives.
We envisioned a large clinic in a beautiful country setting that focuses on women's health, natural fertility
birthing and prenatal momma and pediatric care. aja would offer a large organic community garden to play in, open space to walk the land and enjoy the various farm life, forested areas to hike, private spots for meditation and huts for birthing. We would offer classes on nutrition, cooking, gluten-free living, yoga, fertility education, infant massage, couples massage, birthing tools, lactation and breastfeeding. This was the starting place of aja.
Where We Are Now
Dr. O'Leary and her husband, Lennon, purchased a home in February 2011, as a first step towards aja.
Within that home, Andrea and Dr. O'Leary have created a beautiful and professional environment that encourages openness, laughter, relaxation and health. Amanda continued on her path to become a Midwife, and is currently studying at Birthingway College of Midwifery.
Here at aja, we offer the highest-quality Naturopathic Medicine, Massage Therapy and Craniosacral Therapy for the whole family while specializing in women's health.
Our combined experience of Natural Fertility, pregnancy preparation, Fertility Massage, and Pregnancy Massage help men and women achieve optimal wellness to conceive a happy and healthy baby. Dr. O'Leary also enjoys treating Hormone, Thyroid, Adrenal, Skin and Digestive Imbalances. Andrea utilizes Craniosacral Therapy to treat Birth Traumas, Autism, Lactation Issues, Physical and Emotional Traumas.
Each person who walks through aja's front door is treated as unique with very specific needs that require an individualized treatment plan.
We enjoy collaborating on patient care to help you achieve your health goals. If we don't have all the answers for you or if you want to expand your integrative health team, then we are happy to utilize a referral network of holistic-minded providers. Our goal is to empower and support you on your journey to health and wellness.
Our Soon-to-be Future
You may be wondering what the future of aja holds.
We envision a clinic with both Dr. O'Leary and a Pediatric Naturopath treating women and their families. Andrea will be focusing her attention on Fertility Massage and Craniosacral Therapy; additional therapists will be available for more traditional massage. Amanda will partner with other Midwives to care for women during their pregnancy and birth. aja may also incorporate Acupuncture. We have an evolving vision and process that we know, in the end, will greatly serve the community.
We are actively searching for the perfect property, South of Portland, for the future location of aja.
Our desire for a large piece of land that can hold a family clinic, organic garden, farm, forest and our homes may seem like a dream to some. For us, it is a reality in the making. We welcome you to you join us on this journey!
